Jiffy Spanish Lesson 1: Introduction

Welcome to your first Spanish lesson! You don't have to worry about brain overload today. Your first lesson is more of an introduction into the language you are about to learn. The first, tentative step of a journey that will hopefully last longer than these lessons.

As you probably read on the signup page, these lessons will arrive in your inbox once every day for the first 5 days, then once a week after that. This is deliberate. We know, that by immersing you in the lessons for the first few days that your passion is more likely to increase. The weekly lessons are there to keep the flame alive.

The lessons are pretty straightforward, but there are a couple of things I want to mention before you begin. The best way to use these lessons is to interact as much as you can with them. When you read a phrase, don't just stop there. Make sure you read it out loud and more than once. If you are unsure of how to pronounce any words, revise the lesson on pronunciation (lesson 2).

Even though you may not be a history buff, I recommend you stay with me for the following few paragraphs. Knowing a little bit about the language you want to learn can really help your comprehension on a large scale.

Spanish is known as one of the "Romance" languages. As are French, Portuguese and Italian. They are known as this because they are derived from ancient latin, brought to many parts of Europe by the conquering Roman Empire.

Modern estimates put Spanish speakers at around 400 million people, making it the most spoken Romance language and in the top 4 of languages worldwide, depending on who you believe.

It is widely spoken in Spain, Mexico, half the population of South America, half the population of the West Indies, several countries in Africa as well as approximately 10% of the United States.

The naming of Spanish is a little more complicated than most other languages. But, in simple form, people tend to call it espanol when talking about other languages, but call it castellano when referring to other dialects within Spain.

That's it for your first lesson, now go wait by your inbox and await the delivery of your second lesson, on pronunciation.
