Learn Spanish Online LessonsSpanish Lesson: Verb BasicsToday we are going to look at one of the most common forms of Spanish verbs. Specifically, regular -ar verbs. While there is another class of verbs, irregular verbs, they are a little more complex so we will learn about them at a later date. In order to understand verb conjugation, let me first define the "infinitive" form. The infinitive form is the part of the verb that stays the same during a conjugation. An example in English would be "to walk". Walk, walking, walked all contain "walk" so it is obvious that it is the infinitive form. Let's use an example to make this clearer: Hablar / To talk Yo hablo / I talk Tu hablas / You talk El habla / He talks Can you see how the verb "hablar" changes depending on it's use? It might not seem obvious at first glance, but keep repeating the words out loud until they finally click. These rules apply to any verb ending in -ar. To make things clearer still, let's use hablar again to demonstrate. Pay close attention to what happens to the -ar part of hablar, with each conjugation. Hablar / To talk Yo -----> Hablo Tu -----> Hablas El -----> Habla Nosotros -----> Hablamos Vosotros -----> Hablais Ellos -----> Hablan How easy was that? Using the above rules, you now have the ability to conjugate any verbs you come across that end in -ar. I really hope you are getting something out of these lessons. As you know, I offer these for free because I enjoy teaching people Spanish, so if you have gotten something out of these, please let me know by sending me an email. Until next time...
